Teresa Chikaba
° Ghana circa 1676 – † December 6, 1748
What we know about Chikaba comes from his biography, written after his death around 1752. in.
Chikaba was born into a princely family somewhere in the region that now includes Ghana, Togo, Benin, and western Nigeria. When she was still a young girl, she was kidnapped by Portuguese slave traders who had her baptized Teresa. They sold her into slavery, and Teresa ended up in Spain. There she was purchased by the Duchess of Arcos, who enrolled Teresa into her household. During her service, Teresa was impressed by her mistress's piety and began to imitate her. At the same time, she was given the opportunity to acquire the knowledge necessary to enter a convent. In 1703, when her mistress died, she was released, advising her family that Teresa be given the necessary dowry to enable her to enter the convent. After several refusals, she was finally accepted by the Dominican penitent nuns of the Third Order of Saint Mary Magdalene in Salamanca. In this community, she impressed her sisters with her piety, generosity towards the poor, and gifts of healing. The cause of his beatification is currently being promoted by the Order of Preachers.
