class=\"aux-modern-heading-secondary\"><span class=\"aux-head-before\">\u00b0 Cuevas, Spain 1890 \u2013 \u2020 Lima, Peru 1970<\/span><\/h3><div class=\"aux-modern-heading-divider\"><\/div><div class=\"aux-modern-heading-description\"><p><strong>Jos\u00e9<\/strong> <strong>\u00c1lvarez,<\/strong> a Spanish missionary, joined the Order of Preachers in 1919 and arrived in Peru in 1927 to begin his missionary work in the Amazon jungle. By interacting with the indigenous people, he learned several local languages \u200b\u200band documented the cultures and ways of life of previously unknown tribes.   <\/p><p>One of these tribes, <em>the Amarakaeris<\/em> , gave him the name <em>Apaktone<\/em> \u2013 \u201cOld Father\u201d. This is how all the tribes he visited again and again on his canoe trips began to call him. His goal was to free the indigenous people from exploitation and to help resolve inter-tribal conflicts.
